ENGLISH DESCRIPTION:
No official record was drawn of the last meeting of the Grand Council on 25 July 1943. It is not known, therefore, what they actually said and how the participants behaved. In the many memoirs published in the following years, the Duce and the hierarchs gave contrasting versions of what was said, how it was said and why it was said. There are many questions left unanswered: did the hierarchs really want to expel Mussolini from power? Did they want to end the regime to save the homeland? Or were they traitors? If the Duce considered Grandi's agenda "inadmissible and cowardly", why did he put it to the vote? All those present were amazed by the duce's sluggish reaction to the accusations made against him during the session. Was he resigned to lose? Or did he even want to leave the scene, like an actor who, after being acclaimed for twenty years, had finally been booed for losing the war? Conspiracy of traitors? Boldness of patriots? Or the euthanasia of a leader? New documents finally allow us to answer these questions, and to Emilio Gentile to tell a crucial day in the history of Italy with the suspense of a detective story.
