Ale, diciassette anni non ancora compiuti, scontenta, viziata, confusa. Lo ha sentito benissimo il rumore del tram, quando ha spiccato un balzo verso le rotaie. Perché lo scudo professionale certe volte è di cartapesta, e anche la bellezza può essere un coltello che allarga le nostre ferite. Davanti a sé, adesso, ha un lungo week-end da trascorrere con la moglie Teresa a Chamois, a casa di amici. Un week-end come tanti, si direbbe. Cene, passeggiate, chiacchiere davanti al camino. Ma in quei pochi giorni, per lui e per tutti gli altri, il tempo subirà un'accelerazione e procederà in tutte le direzioni. Ognuno sarà costretto a fare un bilancio della propria vita e a portare allo scoperto i segreti che nasconde persino a se stesso. A catalizzare tutto, forse, l'ombra di Ale, e per Nicola anche un fantasma in carne ed ossa che viene dal passato: il suo vecchio amico Matteo che non vede dagli anni del liceo. Qualcuno proporrà un gioco innocuo per passare il tempo: ma sarà il tempo invece a passare su ognuno di loro. «Il gioco delle ultime volte» ha le sue regole: ciascuno deve raccontare l'ultima occasione in cui ha fatto o visto una determinata cosa o persona; valgono sia i ricordi veri sia quelli inventati. C'è chi parla di una casa in cui ha trascorso le vacanze da ragazzo, chi s'inventa (chissà perché) di aver nostalgia di un anello che non ha mai perso, chi si spinge più a fondo. Come Nicola, e Matteo, che finalmente a notte fonda si troveranno faccia a faccia per continuare quel gioco da soli. Non si vedono da trent'anni: da quando ad Amsterdam, dove erano in vacanza insieme, Matteo aveva fatto a Nicola «uno scherzo» che li avrebbe segnati per sempre.

In front of him, now, he has a long weekend to spend with his wife Teresa in Chamois, at a friend's house. A weekend like any other, he would say. Dinners, walks, chat in front of the fireplace. But in those few days, for him and for everyone else, time will accelerate and proceed in all directions. Everyone will be forced to confront their own lives and to uncover the secrets that are hides even from themselves. To catalyze everything, perhaps, the shadow of Ale, and for Nicola also a ghost in flesh and blood who comes from the past: his old friend Matteo who hasn't seen since high school. Someone will propose a harmless game to pass the time: but instead it will be time to pass on each of them. "The game of the last times" has its rules: everyone must tell the last occasion in which he/she did or saw a specific thing or person; both real and invented memories are valid. There are those who speak of a house where he spent his holidays as a boy, who invent (who knows why) that he misses a ring that he has never lost, who goes deeper. Like Nicola, and Matteo, who finally come face to face in the middle of the night to continue that game alone. They haven't seen each other for thirty years: ever since in Amsterdam, where they were on vacation together, Matteo had made Nicola "a joke" that would have marked them forever.
