"The Moon And The Bonfires": Published in April 1950 and considered Pavese's most beautiful book, "The Moon And The Bonfires" is his latest novel. The protagonist, Anguilla, in the aftermath of the Liberation, returns to his village in the Langhe (Piedmont) after many years spent in America and, in the company of his friend Nuto, retraces the places of childhood and adolescence on a journey through time, in search of ancient and suffered roots. A simple and lyrical story at the same time, built as a continuous coming and going between the plan of the past and that of the present, "The Moon And The Bonfires" recovers the civil themes of the partisan war, the anti-fascist conspiracy, the liberation struggle, and links them to private problems - friendship, sensuality, death -, in a dramatic intertwining that confirms the total non-belonging of the individual to the world and his sad destiny of solitude.
