Si conoscono per caso e iniziano a frequentarsi: lui è più istintivo e impetuoso, lei frena, diffidente per natura, prudente per necessità. Passeggiano per le vie di una Milano brulicante di vita, di mestieri e di attrattive. Vanno a teatro e al cinema, che è ancora una novità, si innamorano, hanno una figlia. Ma il destino non li vuole insieme. Pino, reduce dal fronte, intraprende la carriera militare, e la famiglia non solo gli vieta di riconoscere la bambina avuta da Agnese, ma lo spinge a un matrimonio di convenienza. Agnese va a vivere insieme alla figlia in una casa di ringhiera, nel quartiere dell'ex Lazzaretto, e lì, giorno dopo giorno, tesse la trama minima della propria esistenza, accettando le cose come vengono, lavorando. Agnese e Pino tornano, sempre più raramente, a incontrarsi, senza mai deviare il corso delle proprie esistenze. Si vogliono bene, ma le vicende storiche e personali li separano. Cento anni dopo Maurizio Cucchi ricostruisce la loro vita a partire da ritratti in bianco e nero e da una sparuta corrispondenza, visitando i luoghi in cui hanno abitato e trascorso poche ore spensierate. E mentre ci racconta di un amore silenzioso e tenace stretto tra due guerre, dipinge lo scenario commovente di una Milano (e sullo sfondo anche di Catania), e di un mondo, che non esistono più.

Agnese and Pino were born in 1893 and belong to that unfortunate generation that went through both World Wars. She is a reserved girl, she has recently lost her father and works as a seamstress to provide for an unrealistic mother and her younger brother; he is the scion of an important Sicilian family, in Milan to study Engineering at the Polytechnic, where he meets Carlo Emilio Gadda. They meet by chance and start dating: he is more instinctive and impetuous, she slows down, suspicious by nature, prudent by necessity. They stroll through the streets of a Milan teeming with life, crafts and attractions. They go to the theater and the cinema, which is still new, they fall in love, they have a daughter. But fate doesn't want them together. Pino, a veteran of the front, embarks on a military career, and his family not only forbids him to recognize the child he had with Agnese, but pushes him to a marriage of convenience. Agnese goes to live with her daughter in a railing house, in the neighborhood of the former Lazzaretto, and there, day after day, she weaves the minimum weft of her existence, accepting things as they come, working. Agnese and Pino return, more and more rarely, to meet each other, without ever diverting the course of their lives. They love each other, but historical and personal events separate them. One hundred years later Maurizio Cucchi reconstructs their lives starting from black and white portraits and a sparse correspondence, visiting the places where they lived and spent a few carefree hours. And while he tells us of a silent and tenacious love caught between two wars, he paints the moving scenario of a Milan (and in the background also of Catania), and of a world, which no longer exists.
