ENGLISH DESCRIPTION:
Giovanni Verga's storyteller's career began almost by chance in 1874 when, under pressure from economic difficulties and urged by the publisher Emilio Treves, he published Nedda, a key text in the evolution of the Vergian narrative which, as Luigi Capuana wrote, opened « a new vein in the almost intact mine of the Italian novel ». In fact, it is not only the extraordinary short production of the Verga that starts from this story, but his entire realistic season. As a gradual process of approaching Malavoglia and Mastro don Gesualdo, therefore, Verga's novels acquire further value and reveal themselves, with their narrative and stylistic experiments, the most genuine creative laboratory of the great Italian writer.
